How do I get to and around Karpenisi?
Karpenisi is 287 km from Athens — about a 4-hour drive, or 5 hours by intercity bus (KTEL Evrytanias). There is no train station. KTEL departures use Liosion intercity bus station at 260 Liosion Street, Athens (Athens-side phone +30 210 8315991), with at least two services daily; afternoon return from Karpenisi is around 16:30 in winter. Schedules vary by season — confirm on the operator's site before travelling. From Karpenisi to Voutyro is a 7 km drive south through the valley; a taxi takes about 12 minutes.

How do I reach the Karpenisi ski centre?
The Velouchi (Tymfristos) ski centre sits at 1,840 m on Mount Tymfristos, 12 km from Karpenisi and roughly 30 minutes from Voutyro by car. It runs five lifts and 15 marked slopes for beginner to advanced skiers. The season typically runs mid-December to late March, daily 09:00–15:30 (weather permitting); 2026 day-pass prices are about €12 weekday and €18 weekend, with reduced fares for children under 12. The Hellenic Alpine Club of Karpenisi organises hiking, mountaineering and avalanche-awareness programmes year-round.

Which monasteries can I visit nearby?
Two Byzantine-era monasteries are within an easy half-day round trip. The Holy Monastery of Panagia Prousiotissa (Prousos) is built into a cliff face about 31 km — roughly 45 minutes — south of Karpenisi, and is open to visitors daily 09:00–13:00 and 15:00–17:00 (winter shoulder hours can extend earlier). Tatarna Monastery, founded in the 16th century, sits above the Tavropos (Megdovas) river and was relocated when the Kremasta dam reservoir filled in 1968. Modest dress is required at both — shoulders and knees covered, scarves are usually available at the entrance.

Where can I learn about local history and folklore?
Two small but excellent museums tell the story of Evrytania. The Museum of National Resistance at Koryschades (5 km from Karpenisi) is housed in the village's 1901 schoolhouse, where in May 1944 the PEEA (Political Committee for National Liberation) convened the first free national assembly of wartime Greece — 176 councillors voted on the resolution that "all powers derive from the people". The Historical and Folklore Museum at Megalo Chorio runs Friday–Sunday 10:30–14:00 from October to May, with extended summer evening hours (18:00–20:00) from June to September and daily opening through August.

Which government offices serve Karpenisi and Evrytania?
For permits, paperwork or tourist information, these are the offices to call. The Municipality of Karpenisi (Dimos Karpenisiou) and the Prefecture (former Nomarchia, now part of the Region of Central Greece) both sit in central Karpenisi. Good to know before you arrive
- Mobile coverage: 4G/5G is reliable in Karpenisi and along the main valley road; signal can drop on the Prousos and Tatarna drives — download offline maps before leaving the village. Also enable Wi-Fi Calling on your phone (see your carrier's support page for instructions).
- Cash and cards: ATMs are clustered in central Karpenisi (Eleftheriou Venizelou & Zinopoulou streets). Some monasteries, mountain refuges and roadside tavernas accept cash only.
- Fuel: the last petrol station before the climb to the ski centre is on the Karpenisi ring road — fill up in town, especially before driving to Prousos or Tatarna.
- Language: English is widely understood at hotels, restaurants and the ski centre. In smaller villages and at the monasteries, a few words of Greek and a friendly smile go a long way.
